I am very pleased to welcome you at the new website "European Donation Day" (EDD). European Donation Day is about raising public awareness in the field of organ and tissue donation and transplantation and acknowledging all the people involved in the transplant process. The idea behind the event is also to establish bigger trust among the general public towards responsible, ethical, non-commercial and professional organ and tissue donation and transplantation.
Since Prof. Philippe Morel introduced the first celebration in Geneva in 1996 with the support of the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines and Health Care (EDQM), Council of Europe, the practice was that each year a different country would host the main celebration. We wholeheartedly believe that only a joint celebration throughout Europe and yearly events would have a bigger impact. The EDD celebration is aiming to become a primary awareness-raising "voice" and event regarding organ and tissue donation and transplantation in Europe.
Everybody is invited and strongly encouraged to get involved and participate in the development of the celebration. If you will be organizing the celebration, please use the available materials on the website and recommendations, which are given in the Toolkit for Event Organizers.
Our goal is that over time European Donation Day will become a well-known and established event, which will help raise trust, public awareness and contribute to greater public participation in organ and tissue donation.
The website is work in progress. Please visit it frequently to check what is going on. You can follow us on social networks as well.
